Christopher P. Baker will be leading this Cultural exchange trip and with many years of experience traveling and photographing all around Cuba, he is ideally suited to lead the participants to experience the varied and unique sights and photo opportunities in Eastern Cuba. We’ll arrive on our flight from Miami to Holguin. We’ll have lunch in Bayamo, then drive to Santiago. We will eat dinner together and spend the night in Santiago.
In the morning, we’ll visit historic San Juan Hill with historian and musician Aquillis Jorge Ribaud / Moncada. We will then stop at Cuartel Moncada (where Fidel launched the Revolution with a suicidal attack on the military barracks in 1953). After taking a lunch break in Santiago we’ll explore Reparto Los Hoyos, and head to Escuela de Música de Santiago de Cuba for a children’s performance at this state music school. Then private performance & photo session with Tumba Francesa, Haitian music/dance troupe in traditional costume. Finally, we’ll enjoy a dinner and spend the night in Santiago.
Early this morning, we will take a boat ride to the small traditional island fishing community on Cayo Granma. There, we’ll shoot all morning, as the photo ops abound. After everyone has lunch on the island, Christopher will give a presentation on photo technique. Late afternoon it’s off to the Cementerio Santa Ifigenia where National Hero Jose Marti and Fidel Castro are buried side to side. A military parade takes place every 30 minutes. At dusk, there will be an optional walk back to hotel to capture some good twilight scenes. Late tonight we are set to watch one of the biggest cabaret shows in Santiago- the Tropicana Cabaret. We may even get a backstage pass. Spend the night in Santiago.
Today begins with a nice morning walk along Avenida Manduley, in Vista Alegre. This will include Museo de la Imagem and time with artists at Galeria Rene Valdes Cedeno. For lunch, everyone can partake at their leisure then in the early afternoon Christopher will give a presentation about Cuba, its culture and the Revolution. This will be followed by a trip to El Morro headland castle for some great photos and a cannon-firing ceremony. The rest of the evening will be yours to relax or explore. Overnight in Santiago de Cuba.
In the morning, our group will travel to Baracoa via Guantánamo. We will visit and photograph at the Zoologico Piedra, which is a stone zoo of life-size animals carved into the limestone mountainside. We will have lunch and dinner together this day and overnight in Baracoa.
This morning we’ll visit Boca de Miel river mouth to photograph the fishermen casting fish nets. Lunch will be at everyone’s leisure followed by a photo shoot of a quinceanera. This will take place indoors (under tungsten light) and then walking in the beautiful late afternoon sun. Our group will enjoy a dinner together and overnight in Baracoa.
This morning will be at one’s leisure then we’ll drive to El Güirito for a cultural display by Proyecto Kiriba y Nengón who will dance in traditional costume. Lunch will be followed by a visit to Finca Demonstrativa Las Mujeres. This will include chocolate making and local cooking demo at a private hillside cacao farm. Our group will have dinner together and overnight in Barcoa.
Day 8 :
First off today, we will learn about art tuition and expression with local artist Mildo Mata Carcassé. Then, our group will head to Guantánamo. Lunch, as well as dinner will be on ones own today. The late afternoon or evening we can look forward to meeting and photographing some English-speaking Cubans of Jamaican and Barbadian descent at the West Indies Welfare Center. Overnight in Guantanamo.
This morning we’ll drive to Bayamo via El Cobre, and enjoy lunch and dinner together today. The highlights for this final day and night will be attending a horse-drawn carriage workshop to photograph artisans at work and a horse carriage ride. The horses will bring us to Paladar San Salvador de Bayamo or Meson La Chuchipapa. Overnight in Bayamo.
Day 10 :
This morning, we’ll be photographing at the train station, enjoying a final breakfast together, then transfering to Holguin for flights home.
